[MUSIC PLAYING] HATTIE: I think before you
study design and really start thinking about how
design elements can work to communicate a message,
it’s so surprising to realize that there
are all of these tools to communicate that you don’t
really realize exist until you are working with them yourself. In one of my
typography classes, we started studying how time
can function as image, how type can be visual. And I felt like that was
bringing together all of these interests of mine coming into
these continuing ed programs– art and language and poetry– and this was one way of
expressing all of them at once. So I started focusing
on making work that studying type as
image and from there became inspired to make personal
work based on that motivation. A poem is so interesting
because you can pull out a multitude of images from it. But it has an overall vibe. So when you split up home
apart, what are you left with? Do you have the essence
of the poem still, or do you have
totally new imagery? And what does it mean
when the imagery has become something totally new? One of the best parts
about making I think is feeling surprised at
yourself or your ability. It feels really good to look
at something you’ve made and kind of marvel at it. That’s something
that was totally new for me coming into these
continuing ed classes. [MUSIC PLAYING]
