Ferrari Portofino – The Best Looking Convertible Ferrari Ever? | TEST DRIVE

July 14, 2019 46 By Bernardo Ryan

hi guys i'm sheree hello to you and welcome back to the channel or what must be the perfect afternoon to test drive a new car we're in the hills near to Bari in Italy the weather is gorgeous and excuse the cliche if I should start with this but Enzo Ferrari once said if you ask a child to draw a car they'll draw you a red one and today we're joined by a very red Ferrari Portofino we're gonna take it for a drive on the amazing roads around here hear the soundtrack of the v8 as we go but first we'll get started taking a look at the ins and outs how the car has evolved from the California and California T that came before it and generally I think it's a gorgeous machine I'm looking forward to showing you all about it so let's get started taking a proper look at the new Ferrari Portofino as we get started taking a walk around of the Portofino the first thing you might be wondering is why on a day such as this with very strong sunshine driving in a brand new convertible supercar have I chosen to Park it up for the start of the video with the roof on well don't go away we'll fold it away shortly but let me explain because there is a very specific reason so the Portofino features a retractable hardtop so a two parts retractable lid the tucks away folds backwards underneath the rear boot lid it opens towards the rear it tucks in it actually still leaves quite a generous amount of luggage capacity as well Ferrari very much positioning this towards versatility but one of the challenges manufacturers have when the designing cars with hard tops that fall away is keeping the car looking good when the roof is up now genuinely I think that the Portofino is the first car that looks like a real coupe a a properly good-looking car even when the roof is in place and that's before you fold it away and you've got the open top 2+2 driving experience so we'll talk a bit about the proportions the design and what has gone into this car so it's quite significantly new from the California and California tee those were introduced as a new market segment for Ferrari this is the real next generation of that it has 600 horsepower from the 3.9 liter twin turbo charge for the 8 we'll take a look in more detail at that as but the big thing to me is the looks of the car it is more aggressive it is sporty but not anti socially sporty as they'd like to put it it's still acceptable in terms of looks there are some tribute design elements and styling that come from the Daytona so you'll notice it has a higher longer front bonnet the windscreen line has been pushed towards the rear but it has these distinct sections from body from a high waistline and the roof canopy towards the back as we come around towards the rear it has a very very wide appearance from the rear bootlid spoiler and the positioning of those taillights as well right out towards the sides that works very well to me with the new fastback styling so on the boot lid you have these continuation of the buttresses that come down towards the back which is what gives it this roof line that runs right down towards the rear of the car so how exactly standing here you envisage that folding away I'm not entirely sure we'll check it out again very shortly but also down here the quad exhaust pipes familiar aggression from Ferrari it is a sports car but one that can be used for all purposes so they were saying in California introduce new customers to the brand Portofino will potentially introduce even more new customers to Ferraris brand as a front-engine GT there's five centimeters more space for the rear passengers and the interior has a whole host of upgrades and new infotainment and electronics as well I quite like this sculpted section at the side of the door where it pulls in towards narrowest points but thinking about aerodynamics of the car coming around towards the front it has an air curtain so right here on the outside of the headlights you can see how the air can flow around and drag is reduced by pulling air around the side of the car working in harmony with this wheel arch evacuator that again pulls air out and gets rid of it out of the way so the car is 6% more aerodynamically efficient than the previous model it is actually with the new chassis it's 35% more rigid than we saw in the California California team new roof mechanism and it has a development of this engine as well so let us come around actually and just open up the door and have a quick look at the engine itself always one of the best bits about a Ferrari we'll come back and talk more about the interior very shortly so lever under the center of the steering column will come back around here I should point out this color it's Rosso Portofino a color developed specifically for this car a pearlescent deep metallic red a very very nice color and also Portofino itself named after the very pretty and elegant Italian coastal town a place I visited before and it is lovely so where is the caption here always the first fun task there we go got it open up the engine bay in here we have the 3.9 liter twin turbocharged v8 an engine that's why the engine of the Year twice it has 600 horsepower 760 Newton meters of torque which is an awful lot it's mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox and this car will go north to 200 kilometers an hour so 124 miles per hour in just ten point eight seconds almost half a second quicker than the California T before it so it's got 40 horsepower more than before the car is a touch lighter than before it's down about 80 kilograms which comes a little bit from reworked the engine with new filters and intakes new intercoolers as well for obviously bringing down the temperature with that extra power also as probably I would think you would guess it's rear-wheel drive no all-wheel drive in here you've got to go for a GT c4 list so for that what you can have the la Sol T which has a similar component tree to the engine setup in this car with the v8 so down at the front actually it's got some nice options on this car with the carbon fiber the lowest blitter you can see but there's a lot of aggression from the familia Ferrari style grille full width but also with those additional intakes down towards the lower sides I like how the bonnet fits and shapes and well to be honest I really really like how this car looks I'm not gonna lie I think it's a spectacularly good looking machine for what it is to have a convertible car that just looks this good when the roof is up it's incredible so we're seeing the car here on the standard wheel 20 inch wheels that it has fitted around the carbon side skirt that runs the length and I think we should step in and just take a proper first glance at the interior we'll look at this in more detail after taking it for a drive but this car has the standard seats there are various different options of seats that you can have it has the upgraded carbon fiber driving zone so we step in here it has the LED shift lights up at the top of the wheel the carbon fiber style wheel with all the buttons and controls for your driving modes found on that but it also has the new 10.2 5 inch central display system so significantly updated you can have this with apple carplay and a number of other features and then over to the passenger side is this additional 8.8 inch screen that allows the passengers to see various different bits of information as well so I've got the key in my pocket just to quickly show you the Ferrari style key it has buttons on the back for your usual controls that can tuck away next to the central column again split from the raised path of the dashboard as is traditional in Ferraris the engine start/stop button is right here though so let's bring it in to life and the v8 comes on so naturally you hear a bit of the muted sound because it's a turbocharged engine but trust me wait until you hear this is how this sounds when we're out driving so you've got these digital displays either side of the central rev counter which look very very nice this screen high-resolution quite responsive decent navigation system we're familiar with it from driving in the GTC fula so before you've got various features launch control the manettino here to choose your different driving modes slightly restricted in terms of your options versus some of the more sporty cars the larger models and the lineup the passenger display turns on by giving it a touch so you've got some nice information to see there you can see in the back it is a 2+2 there's a little bit of space here but not too much it wouldn't be fun for a long journey but maybe for a short one you can just about get away with it so we'll take a full look at I guess everything else when we get back after a little Drive but I think we should take this car now and see what it's like on the roads and the first thing I should probably do to actually do that is pop the roof down so down here in the center of the centre column you can press it this way it will let us know the roof is opening and the magic is going to happen you can see the rear part falls onto the top the boot then opens up behind that and then the whole thing is going to fall away opened up to the elements you can do this while you're driving up to 40 km/h it takes 14 seconds to fall away and then it is done gives us the beep and we're ready to go so let's go drive and see what the Portofino is like on the roads to get us started I'm actually going to put it into comfort mode which seems like the appropriate place to get beginning we'll keep it in automatic so you've got the nice elongated paddle shifters being a Ferrari it is still a sporty exciting car even though it's positioned more towards grand tourer so obviously like I was saying Ferrari introduced the California and then the California tee but those started from 2009 and it was very much a new market for Ferrari a world of discovery in terms of a car that you can take your kids in the back or that you can take on an adventure or a road trip so you could drive it let's say across Italy to a location like where we are right now to enjoy these kind of roads and we'll get out of this small little village area onto something a little bit more open where we can experience more of it but even in comfort mode you can hear a bit of the exhaust so it's it's quite versatile itself it goes quite quiet when you're just driving or cruising along when you put your foot down it goes through various different stages of sound and tone they were telling us it's from a base at the bottom through a tenor to a soprano and you can hear a bit of that when you're driving as well and of course with the passenger to display your passenger you can see the revs the speed and what's going on as well so cruising along like this these gearboxes have developed wonderfully double clutch system it is super smooth you wouldn't even notice it shifting if you weren't hearing a little bit of the noise in the background of course this is a cyclist location given all nice roads with weather like this the cyclists locations and everyone I go past is looking at this I've heard a few like new Ferrari because obviously this is the first opportunity to be driving the brand new car so cruising like this comfy suspension so comfort mode has its in the bumpy road it's an option to have the suspension system so the car starts in the UK at 166 pounds but pretty much everyone should add the soft suspension mode especially if you're going to be driving it on be roads in the United Kingdom which have potholes and all sorts of bumps that's a button right here on the steering wheel when you turn it up in sport you can enable that in comfort mode it's on by default so let's go into sports and start making a little bit more noise out of the car press the auto button in the center double press even and turn it off so we can shift manually so just third gear the cars a lot of talk 760 Newton meters steering wheel-mounted shift paddles something to think about I suppose if you're not familiar with driving a Ferrari all the lights and wipers just bill the revs a little bit you can start to get a little bit of a sense of this it sounds good when you shift you get this nice pull snaps with sort of style of sound to it this is my kind of road to be enjoying a car like this turns it is got the Ferrari style characteristics for steering it's pointy and direct the steering doesn't have a huge heavy weights to it it just use a twist bit and off you go in a very nice way the car doesn't feel heavy that's perhaps my only qualm is when you get up towards the red line like that don't necessarily really want there to be more to go it goes up to seven and half thousand rpm but you want a little bit more out of it you want it to keep going yeah that sounds gay to any bounce off in a little bit also lots and lots of smiles they reduce the wind buffeting and lots as well so we don't have to deflector in the rear at the moment I do have all the windows up he says no I don't have the rear windows up you can actually put those up individually separately from the front like that then you'll get slightly less but the body wind buffeting is reduced 40% the face some head wind buffeting is actually reduced 17% is not great from California California TV before that or even the California tea had a number of change from the regular model California that was when they introduced a few more updates in terms of power performance I feel like you're able to introduce more character what this card to have when they did that now I'm not going to be turning esc off the day because it is quite these roads are deceptively slippy we could say much more than you think when you lift off the onus on a few points spinning around heading down the other long ago about it speaking Persian that's a bit war breaks very good Ferraris always come with ceramic brakes standard so even though this is the entry level model you can pull it out the base stand among Ferrari chef's lights on the steering wheel are awesome this grows phenomenally awesome this is exactly where you want to come with a car like this you can drive it across the continent gently they claim a 700 a policy it's a range from the fuel tank which is quite frankly huge for a simple car for a sports car so long-distance driving is possible along with all of your luggage there's a three load system in the back we'll see more on that right now spin around come back off as much better than driving an open-top Ferrari and Italy honestly it's certain experience now I'd really think what are perhaps the disadvantages outside the slightly muted engine sound I'm sorry to say but that is the one thing that bothers me against the world where we had naturally aspirated engines that just screamed a little bit more like the four five eight Italia forget me wrong it's a brilliant engine this amount or how quickly it gets moving is virtually non-existent you have no idea that there was any at all that it was turbocharged really if it wasn't for the sound that it was making and the talk that we hear the sound of the exhaust on the roads the talk is just out of this world clearly it's a very fast it's quicker than really any human being actually needs a car to be I think because there's a lot for me in terms of me image the styling because it's a little bit sports here they say it's not gender specific the California always had I guess a slight image in that respect whereas this I feel is much more neutral it's much more calm and anybody can drive that say a family could be going out in the hospital the wife can be enjoying I think steering I like an awful lot the suspension could probably actually be even further it's it's quite I mean we're on very smooth roads right now to be to be fair but it's it's very smooth I think you can get away with dialing up a little bit off for enhancing turning and driving characteristics it has lots of technology in terms of computer systems controls looking after everything while you've got them turned on of course maybe the roof could work at 50 kilometers an hour that would be a little bit nicer because obviously then you've got town speeds rather than having to slow down touch as you enter in town you can put the roof up or we'll have a look more around look at the luggage general interior say two things are but let's just enjoy the last bit of this road for the moment down to first gear it's silly and you know if you're breaking and you just hold the left half in all possible opportunity that a cat which driving on a racetrack is obviously I can never send the alcohol I probably need to be speaking it's a bit louder so you can actually hear me but my words this kind of this kind of man was a Ferrari case in point there we've got ourselves a roundabout let us do the roof press the button it starts doing its thing stop sign here's they'll come to a stop it's rolling away behind me you see the Poonam are it's pretty easy to do this really these days it feels weird that it wasn't actually that long ago the ruse could not be done while you're driving just gonna watch 40 kilometers an hour it will close up and then the car has completely transformed wait for the beef now it's a closed coupe a it's a quiet comfortable and you can hear that it's quieter you hear the noise of the air-conditioning again that's been worked on to make everything a little bit more comfortable on that side put it back in for comfort go automatic do its thing you know sit in seventh at some ridiculously low speed that doesn't make any sense at all but that's where I suppose this is the the everyday Ferrari this is the Ferrari that you can use for all purposes and they were saying that many California T customers for example have been using them as versatile everyday cars that are still sporty and fun to drive these are the keywords that we've been hearing in the presentations and discussions about the car and it very much takes that I like looking at the mirrors I love looking at the color of this car outside when you're just looking with any view of it you've got a decent visibility amount of view you can see around the arches look through the swooping arches through the rear window for a convertible hardtop there's a great view backwards you can see in all full lock so that has to be said that works very well maybe thinking about a little bit now that we've got the roof up there's still a fair amount of buffeting I think that was something I thought about when I drove the California T and before I went on a road trip one that you could feel quite a lot while you're while you're in it but I want to show you more of the ins and outs inside here so let me find somewhere where I can pull over and run you through a little bit more detail about what on inside Portofino before I switch the car off let us open the roof back up because I haven't actually shown you what this car looks like from the outside with the roof open so we'll get that done it's just gonna take a moment I can see more bit to the mechanism as well while we're doing this one slightly confusing thing is that the switch is arguably difficult to work out which way it presses as part of this neat center console we'll run over that again a little bit more detail but there we go the car is open so you can open the windows traditional Ferrari has the buttons in the center put those down as well just to get the full look of the car the clean sweeping lines so I want to talk to you a little bit more while we're here and firstly actually that's pop it in neutral and I need to do both hands there we go we're into neutral pulling both paddles just so we don't slide anywhere the electronic handbrake is down here but if you turn it off in first it engages automatically so what we've got here obviously is the yellow central rev counter revving up to seven and a half I like the way it goes all the way up to ten the gear indicator shows in the centre of Matt's the left-side display you have a number of controls that you access through here so for example status information trip details vda which tells you a little bit more about the driving modes and how the car is currently set up turbo information as you can see the cache of the turbo anything when it's in neutral and then lots and lots of settings that status you got things like your voltage and power and that side of things so what else do we have down towards the left we have or see the lights settings you have your mirror controls out there on the door your memory settings here and also a button to open the boots should you prefer nice carbon fiber side sir Ferrari logo on this as well and standard seats have some elements of electronic control you have more seats with more options available as well and then the carbon fiber driver zone which comprises off the carbon surround around the rev counter the carbon fiber shift lights you have across the top obviously the carbon fibre the center of the steering wheel as well with plenty of control so your indicators that you can now push with a finger as well as just with your thumb the traditional way lights bumpy roads star phone controls manettino wiper settings similarly to the lights indicate the other way on the back you also have controls for volume and next in the last track and that kind of information as well so that's quite nice to have on there so coming over towards the center there's an air vent through here the diffuser that sends air around depending how exactly you have it configured quite a smart clever system the air vents it cools very very quickly you notice that the infotainment system here is not gonna work as I was just reversing so that's actually turn it off Comfort access the steering wheel moves up you can see in here that you have a number of things if we go home you have access to your radio immediate Navi phone settings lots and lots of things in here perhaps that could be a touch faster to be honest maybe it could move around ever so slightly quicker but it's a nice big display lots of information I like the way it's integrated it's quite neat gives a little bit of the floating tablet style but fits with the styling of this car then the passenger display I said we'd come back and talk a bit more about this we gave back you can see lots and lots of things in here if we go to performance I think that's probably my favorite you have the live rev counter so if I actually do that start it back up literally tiny bits of lag I would say tiny tiny bit but not over all that bad nice to have and the passenger also has this nice foot plate as well car has the upgraded sound system the JBL system but let me actually step out now and show you what the car looks like roof down and I'm aware they're quite unusually we've got a long way into this video and it's the first time you're seeing the convertible parked with the roof down but that's half the fun isn't it I think now it looks beautiful it's very very elegant those high rear buttresses you can see there's some protective film on here for where the roof touches so you have a bit of color inside and you do see that in the rear view mirror it's quite nice as well but gives it a very smooth sleek appearance especially parked up like this I love those prototype Italian number plates they look very very smart so I have to say honestly I think it has to be the best-looking car of this class I think there's no I guess discussion about that especially roof up roof down either way to be honest its aggressive but still elegant and still smart so let's have a quick look at some other areas so for example the rear space you can see with the seat in my position a small child could fit their legs down there but you need it a bit further forward I have driven a California tee with four adults in so it can be done but not necessarily the comfiest if we come back here and open up the boot the button is there releases folds up this way you can see of course the roof is tucked away in here but you still have good access underneath where you can fit a number of pieces of luggage you can see the through load system where the seats open up at the back and to allow you to feed things all the way through but you can fit three trolley bags in here and this cover when the roof is back up on the car moves upwards to give you even more luggage space so for the long hauls you've got the room you need back here the specifications plaque of this car all Ferraris now coming with their factory spec inside the boot or the front boot if it's say a mid-engine car which is quite a nice thing as well we've got more optional carbon these inserts around the around the lights there's soft close that latches the boot down like I said we're on the 20 inch standard wheels as an optional twin spoke wheel we've got the new Pirelli PZero tires goodness what else can we show you the Scuderia shields I think it's an absolute must but color for me is the right one for this car well there we have it a detailed look and first drive in the new open top grand tourer from Ferrari the Portofino it's an elegant car named after a very elegant town and a lovely thing to be driving roof down in the Italian sunshine the way that it should be done so when I first saw the car I was impressed by how it looks I've been impressed today by how it drives in the whole package and I really think in this segment this has to be the ultimate expression of enjoying open-top motoring it is a lovely lovely thing I like what they've done in terms of the appearance making it a little bit sportier but not necessarily over the top giving it distinct design looks but still maintaining the Ferrari styling in this color Rosso Portofino is a wonderful wonderful choice it looks very nice and I recommend to take a good look at thinking about that if you're out there thinking about purchasing one of these yourself anyway guys I hope you've enjoyed the video first proper look around this new car here at the launch in Italy I've certainly enjoyed driving it so big thanks to Ferrari and as always a very very big thanks to you for watching the videos I hugely appreciate it and if you'd like into the notifications on new videos if you want to be the first to see them when they go live make sure to click the bell button to turn on notifications down below but as always thank you again thank you very much for watching I'll see you again in the next video thanks I'll see
