Day In The Life of a Graphic Design Major
Hello, my name is Melanie Slattery and I am a Graphic Design major at the University of Iowa. I’m in my Junior year and I am from Calamus, Iowa. So, I always knew I wanted to go into some sort of creative field but I also had a very business oriented mind. I loved math, I loved problem solving and graphic design turned into a way to channel both into one career path. I’m involved in a lot beyond being a student. I’m also involved as a designer, photographer and content creator and all sorts of different things at Sculpt which is a local marketing agency. We primarily do social media stuff. So we’re managing brands and their online identity, whether that’s through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, all that sorts of stuff. But we also are just about where we can take a brand and if it’s putting it elsewhere that’s not online, we’re all about that as well. It’s really exciting to be a part of because it was started up 2 years ago so it’s still young and still molding and there’s this feeling of ‘where could it go?’ Everyone is super passionate about moving the business forward. I also peer mentor for a Graphic Design II class. Which means I am just there during class times to help students, give them advice, suggestions, feedback, help critique their work and use my experience from the class to help them continue through it. The instructor for that class is Vinicius Lima and he is excellent, I’ve had him for a few classes already. He really creates this really cool environment. The program here starts with a strong foundation in basic design principles and typography. Our program is fairly strong, we have really good facilities for the students to work and to discuss their work. They can direct here, they can do a lot of things here. Our faculty is very successful. We have a faculty that works on really large projects throughout the United States and internationally too. We see graphic design every day. We need graphic design everywhere we go. So, it’s this area where you can do a lot of things and it’s a very exciting environment to be in. I chose Iowa because I fell in love with Iowa City. I love that Iowa City is so intermixed with this other community, the city. There’s such a diverse group of people and everyone’s so passionate about what they’re going into. I think that would go with any college town but I’ve gotten to know so many cool people. I’ve always been fascinated by the different places they’ve come from and the different places they want to go. During the Spring of my freshman year the building I’m actually sitting around right now, Art Building West, my friend and I came to an open house they had before the semester had classes again. And I remember walking around inside and, it’s kind of cheesy but, I really had this moment where I’m in this gorgeous, gorgeous building and I just realized, I’m in the right place. This is where I’m supposed to be, I’m supposed to be getting my education here and learning and be surrounded by these beautiful places and amazing people.
